Advantages

Efficient waste management at a self-service waste station

Vestia Sorting Yards are designed to meet the ever-stricter requirements in waste management, offering the municipality’s residents an effortless recycling option with flexible opening hours. The self-service sorting yard combines automation and remote monitoring, thus improving the operation, cost-efficiency and user-friendliness of waste management. A single remote control centre is able to serve a wide customer base in any municipality in Finland.

Higher recycling rate

Extended opening hours and easy-to-use self-service allow residents to take care of waste management when it suits them best. This will increase the use of the service and improve the recycling rate in your municipality.

Safe and easy use of the services

The Vestia Sorting Yard remote control centre offers customers support and guidance in real time, which makes using the yard’s services safe and pleasant. Real-time remote monitoring also lowers the threshold for using the services independently. Up to 78% of customers know what to do at the sorting yard on their own.

Efficiency and savings

Thanks to automation, the Vestia Sorting Yard reduces the staffing requirements and logistics costs of the municipality’s waste management. A single remote control centre can manage multiple sorting yards, maximising the use of resources and minimising costs.

Frequently asked questions about sorting yards

  • What is the Vestia Sorting Yard?

The Vestia Sorting Yard is an automated and remotely monitored self-service waste station that enables efficient and easy sorting and recycling of waste. Our services are designed especially for the needs of municipalities to meet the ever-stricter recycling obligations and to promote sustainable development.

  • Costs: How much does the construction and maintenance of the sorting yard cost?

The costs of the sorting yard depend on the method of implementation (1-level or 2-level solution) and the extent to which existing structures can be utilised in the construction. Each yard is tailored to the needs of the customer in detail, which means that the final costs are not known until the design phase.

  • Permits: What permits are required for the construction of the sorting yard?

A building permit is required for the construction of the sorting yard. In some cases, an environmental permit may also be required.

  • Safety: How is it ensured that customers can use the services safely at the sorting yard?

The use of the services at the sorting yard is always remotely monitored and, for example, the cardboard and plastic pressing machines can be stopped remotely from the control centre to avoid dangerous situations. All safety factors prescribed by the legislation have been taken into account in the design and any risks involved in using the services have been minimised.

  • Technology: What kind of technology is used at the sorting yard?

The operation of the sorting yard is based on self-service and remote monitoring. The technology used at the sorting yard is designed to support these functions. Monitoring is carried out using the latest camera technology, which means that there are no blind areas at the yard. The service machine and pressing machines are easy to use and additional instructions can be requested from the control centre staff, if necessary.

  • Location: What would be the optimal location for the sorting yard and what must be taken into account when considering the location?

With regard to the location of the sorting yard, it is important to consider its easy accessibility. The easier it is to access the sorting yard, the higher its utilisation rate will be. The yard also requires good data connections to ensure the functionality of the remote monitoring and automation. The best option is an optical fibre connection.

  • Logistics: How are different types of waste collected and how do the logistics of the yard work?

The waste types are collected at the sorting yard using the most appropriate technology. The yard has a separate building for hazardous waste and electrical scrap. Cardboard and plastic packaging as well as combustible waste (mixed waste) are collected in pressing machines, while the remaining types of waste are sorted onto pallets and in silos for collection using a grab loader. The logistic control for emptying is handled by the remote control centre alongside other control centre work.

  • Construction: How is it ensured that the project stays on budget and schedule?

Through experience, the sorting yard construction has reached a level where the costs and schedule are easy to predict and keep under control. The methods of implementation have been carefully thought out and tested in practice.

  • What kinds of waste can be recycled at the Vestia Sorting Yard?

Several different types of waste can be accepted at the Vestia Sorting Yard, such as packaging waste, metal, concrete and rock material, electrical and electronic scrap as well as hazardous waste. The accepted types of waste are defined in the design phase in accordance with the waste management regulations of each area.
